Water Levels Rebound After Long Slump

Water Levels Rebound After Long Slump

LUDINGTON, MI (AP) - Great Lakes water levels are rebounding after a decade long slump that hammered the maritime industry and even fed conspiracy theories about plots to drain the inland seas that make up nearly one-fifth of the world’s fresh surface water.

The three biggest lakes - Superior, Huron and Michigan - have risen steadily since fall 2007, when for a couple of months Superior’s levels were the lowest on record and the others nearly so. Erie, shallowest of the lakes, actually exceeded its long-term average in June. So did Lake Ontario, although its level is determined more by artificial structures than nature.

US-IRC Great Lakes Championship hosted by the Port Huron Yacht Club

The US-IRC Great Lakes Championship is to be hosted by the Port Huron Yacht Club.

Water levels in Lakes Michigan-Huron are up after above-average precipitation in the Great Lakes basin this week.

The lakes, which are connected by the Straits of Mackinac, are 10 inches higher than at this time a year ago, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports in its latest weekly update.

Lakes Michigan-Huron are projected to rise 2 more inches over the next 30 days, along with Lake Superior.

This month, the Lake Michigan-Huron basin has seen above average precipitation, while the remaining lake basins have received lower than average rain, Corps officials said.

KIMBALL, Mich. -- Don't think camping. Think Kamping. Don't think solitude. Think socializing.

The Port Huron KOA private campground, following a national trend to more cushy camping options, has 13 new family lodges -- really like little houses -- with kitchens, full bath and even an upstairs for children.

Set in a row near the back of the 75-acre campground, they're for social people who like being near others while getting away from it all.

"This is the direction campgrounds are going. We're about six to eight years ahead. I think the old camping stuff is gone," says general manager Anthony Jacobs. "We're more of an amusement park or family fun park. People pull in here with a tent and upgrade to a Kabin or a Lodge. Once they stay in a Kabin, you'll never see the tent again."

Amenities and atmosphere -- and spelling -- are the huge differences between private campgrounds such as KOA and more stately traditional camping parks, such as Pinery Provincial Park in Ontario.

But before you write a eulogy for traditional camping, hold on.

"We will not be changing our approach anytime soon," says Alistair MacKenzie, ecologist at the Pinery, which has 1,000 campsites and not a single cabin. "A lot of people still value sitting around a campfire and sleeping in a sleeping bag under the stars." On a busy summer weekend, the Pinery can have 8,000 to 10,000 campers.

LAND'S RETURN: A chronology of events leading up to Thursday's ceremony at Ipperwash park

Posted 16 hours ago

1740-- Ancestors of the Kettle and Stony Point people firmly established in the vicinity of Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair.

1763-- Royal proclamation establishes an "Indian Country" where aboriginal land is protected. Land must be voluntarily ceded to Crown before non-aboriginal settlers can occupy it.

1827-- Eighteen local Chippewa chiefs cede 2.1-million acre Huron Tract. They receive a perpetual annuity and select four tracts of land reserved for their exclusive use. They include 2,650 acres at Stony Point, and 2,446 acres at Kettle Point.

1919-- Following years of internal discontent, the Department of Indian Affairs consents to creation of separate bands in Sarnia and Kettle and Stony Point, dividing the annuity and trust fund.

1928-- Stoney Point reserve surrenders its entire beachfront land for sale to private interests. Some band members hire lawyer to stop sale amid charges of bribery and fraud.

1932-- Ontario buys a portion of the beach from a developer and establishes Ipperwash Provincial Park.

1937-- Band tells park authorities a sacred burial ground exists on the land and ask for its protection.

1942-- Having failed to obtain a voluntary land surrender, federal government takes over the remaining 2,211 acres for a military base under the War Measures Act, and names it Camp Ipperwash. Ottawa promises to return the land when it's no longer needed. Robert George, grandfather of Dudley George, is among 16 families forced to relocate to neighbouring Kettle Point.

1993-- Weary of government inaction, Stony Point descendants, including Dudley George, move into army camp and occupy it.

1995-- On Sept. 4, with negotiations stalled, occupiers move into the neighbouring park as camping season ends. Two days later, Dudley George is fatally shot in confrontation with Ontario Provincial Police, becoming the first native in modern Canadian history to be killed in a government conflict over land.

1998-- Ottawa and Kettle and Stony Point reach agreement in principle to return the army camp to natives. Final settlement still hasn't been reached.

Bayfield Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Bureau - where the water meets the soul

We have enjoyed the village community of Bayfield , Ontario for decades as have many others. I have noticed that our USA Bayfield, WI is pro-active in promoting it-self. Thumbs up!
I am offering to assist our little community to get its act together and do the same.
It is going to be a rough season for the business community.

Three men rescued from Lake Huron

Three men were rescued after their boats started taking on water Saturday afternoon, according to U.S. Coast Guard Port Huron Station Petty Officer Andrew Bartos. Crews responded to Lake Huron about 4 p.m. after receiving a call that two men on a sailboat were in distress. The about 12-foot boat flipped about four miles north of Port Huron. When it righted, the men were unable to remove water from the vessel, Bartos said. The U.S. Coast Guard removed the men from the boat, and they called another man to help tow the sailboat to shore. Bartos said an about 10-foot boat met them in the lake and hooked up to the sailboat. The second boat then began to take on water also. The third man was rescued, and all three were taken to the Black River, Bartos said. There, they gathered a team of boaters and retrieved the two vessels.
